1965 AUSTRIA EN Martin C. Herbst is an Austrian painter, whose work focuses on an elaborate reevaluation of historical themes and theories on classical portraiture and the human figure.
FR Herbst est un peintre autrichien, dont le travail se focalise sur la réévaluation élaborée des thèmes historiques et des théories sur les portraits classiques et la figure humaine. Ses "sujets" sont personnels mais représentent à la fois le meilleur travail de leur époque. L'intention traditionnelle d'afficher l'apparence distinctive, la personnalité, et même l'humeur de la personne sont combinés dans une forme de représentation souvent drôle et inattendue. Les visages apparaissent sur des sphères et ressemblent à des visages lunaires. Déformés lorsqu'ils sont peints sur des surfaces courbes, ils paraissent "normaux" si le spectateur les perçoit sous un autre angle de vue. Ils sont aussi peints de manière très traditionnelle, mais dans de multiples versions. Ses figures virtuoses, souvent monumentales, semblent paradoxalement, distantes, méditatives mais aussi présentes et vives. Herbst évite toute narration ou toute forme de discours illustré, et préfère exploiter son potentiel en tant que coloriste averti.
