Carlos Agustín, is a prominent sculptor born in Mexico City in 1952. Early in his life Carlos Agustín studied at two of Mexico’s most prestigious art institutions: La Esmeralda School of Painting and Sculpture under the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) and the San Carlos Academy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His talent gained early recognition when, in 1979, he received an Honorable Mention at the INBA Sculpture Triennial. In 1982, he was awarded the Premio Único de Escultura at the Second Encounter of Young Art in Aguascalientes. Carlos Agustín’s work has been bought by several prestigious artistic institutions such as Colección Jumex and Museo Kochi.
His sculptures are defined by their abstract geometric, often monumental, essence. He transforms industrial materials like steel into dynamic forms that seem to draw lines in the air, reflecting a deep understanding of space, material, and the interplay of light and shadow.
Born during the dynamic cultural shifts of the 1950s and inspired by the artistic revolutions of the 1970s, Carlos Agustín draws from a variety of movements, including Conceptualism and Minimalism. These influences, combined with his unique perspective, have propelled his work into the global arena.
Agustín’s sculptures are more than static objects; they are living expressions of motion and emotion. As one critic described, “His art is a living flame, extending its hands to draw in the air and materializing in steel.”
